Obama endorses Troy Jackson in Maine Senate race

Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Democrat Troy Jackson in Maine’s U.S. Senate race, releasing a video urging voters to back him against five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins.
“We need Troy to deliver for us in the Senate,” Obama said in the video posted on Thursday. “So do not sit this one out. Get out there and vote for Troy Jackson.” He praised Jackson’s record on wages, prescription drug costs and abortion rights.
Jackson, a fifth-generation logger and former Maine Senate president, secured the Democratic nomination at a July snap convention after Graham Platner exited the race. Democrats hope to flip the seat in their quest to take the Senate, now narrowly held by Republicans 53-47.
The endorsement is one of 24 videos Obama has recorded for Senate and gubernatorial candidates nationwide, according to Politico. It lands ahead of the second Jackson-Collins debate airing Thursday night at 8 p.m.
Polls show a tight contest, with Jackson holding a narrow lead in recent averages, though Collins has a history of outperforming polls. Early voting in Maine runs October 5 through October 29, with Election Day on November 3.
