SC orders fresh polls in 50 Punjab wards

The Supreme Court has ordered fresh elections in 50 municipal wards in Punjab. The bench said the December 2024 polls were “vitiated” by violence and fraud.
The order covers 28 wards of the Patiala Municipal Corporation. It also covers 22 wards in Baghapurana and Dharamkot in Moga district.
A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana passed the order on Thursday. The court said the election process was broken in these wards.
The case began after claims that candidates were blocked from filing nomination papers. There were reports that papers were snatched and torn. Police and ruling party members were accused of blocking rivals.
The court had earlier set up a fact-finding commission. It was led by former judge Nirmaljit Kaur. The panel’s report backed the claims of wrongdoing.
The state election commission must now hold fresh polls in these wards. The order is a setback for the AAP government in Punjab.
