Hurricane Isaias strengthens, eyes Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias is growing stronger over the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasters say it could peak as a Category 3 storm before hitting land.
Landfall is expected between Friday evening and early Saturday. The current forecast puts the hit zone between Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Panama City, Florida. Models focus on the coast from Mobile, Alabama, to Destin and Pensacola, Florida.
At 4 a.m. CT on Thursday, the storm was moving east-northeast at 9 mph. It is expected to keep getting stronger over the warm Gulf waters.
Officials are preparing for damage and flooding. About 11.2 million barrels of Gulf oil production could be lost as rigs shut down. Coastal residents have been told to check emergency plans.
AccuWeather’s Bernie Rayno said Isaias could reach Category 3 strength at its peak. Weather Channel star Jim Cantore is already in Pensacola to cover the storm.
The storm is the latest threat in an active hurricane season. Forecasters will update the track every few hours through landfall.
