Nobel Peace Prize 2026: Date, Favourites and How It Is Decided

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, October 9, at 11 am local time in Oslo. Here is everything you need to know about the world’s most famous peace award.
This year, 287 candidates were nominated: 208 individuals and 79 organisations. The list is kept secret for 50 years, locked in a vault in the Norwegian Nobel Institute, so the publicly discussed favourites are based on nominators’ disclosures and expert assessments.
Bookmakers currently favour humanitarian causes. Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms, a civilian aid network working through the country’s civil war, leads the odds, followed by Doctors Without Borders. Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s Yulia Navalnaya also feature prominently.
Donald Trump has claimed nominations from several world leaders, but experts say his chances are slim, pointing to the ongoing war in Iran. Last year’s prize went to Venezuela’s Maria Corina Machado, who was not among the favourites.
The winner is chosen by a five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee appointed by parliament. The laureate receives a medal, a diploma and 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million, presented in Oslo on December 10.
