India’s EV Sales Hit Record High in September on Festive Demand

India’s electric vehicle sales hit a record high in September 2026, powered by festive-season demand and a widening choice of models across price bands.
Two-wheelers continued to lead the charge, accounting for the bulk of volumes as buyers snapped up electric scooters with festive discounts. Electric three-wheelers held strong in the commercial segment, while passenger EV sales posted steady growth.
Industry watchers say falling battery costs, better charging infrastructure and state-level incentives have combined to make EVs genuinely competitive with petrol vehicles on running costs. New launches from both legacy automakers and startups have given buyers more options than ever.
The record month comes as the government pushes its EV30@2030 goal, targeting 30 per cent electric penetration in private cars and higher shares in two- and three-wheelers.
Challenges persist, particularly around charging infrastructure in smaller cities and the upfront price gap in the car segment. But dealers report waiting lists for popular models, suggesting demand is no longer the problem. The industry now expects the festive momentum to carry into the December quarter.
