India Crosses 1 Billion Broadband Connections, Says Scindia

India has crossed 1 billion broadband connections, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital journey.
The figure covers both mobile and fixed-line broadband users, reflecting a decade of explosive growth driven by cheap data and affordable smartphones. India now has among the lowest data prices in the world, which has pulled hundreds of millions of first-time users online.
Scindia said the expansion has been powered by rapid 4G and 5G rollouts, along with the BharatNet programme taking fibre to village panchayats. Rural connections have grown fastest in recent years, narrowing the urban-rural digital gap.
The milestone matters because connectivity now underpins everything from digital payments to education and healthcare delivery. Government services, from ration delivery to farm advisories, increasingly run on digital rails.
Challenges remain. Connection quality varies widely, and millions still lack reliable high-speed access. Experts say the next frontier is meaningful connectivity: not just a signal, but affordable devices, digital literacy and services that work for first-generation users.
