Kerala seals up to 300 MW power deal with NTPC

Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan met NTPC officials in Delhi on October 7 and secured up to 300 megawatts of power from the company’s Sinnar project in Maharashtra at Rs 5.18 per unit.
The four-month-old UDF government is battling a power crisis, with the opposition CPI(M) attacking it over outages. The NTPC deal is aimed at locking in long-term supply.
Separately, an MoU was signed between KSEB, NTPC and NTPC Green for a 2,000 megawatt-hour battery storage project at Kayamkulam. Two 80-megawatt-hour storage units at Pothencode and Sreekandapuram are targeted for completion by March 2027.
The Chief Minister also requested a dedicated NTPC plant for Kerala and sought expedited completion of the 27-megawatt solar project at Kayamkulam. A power purchase agreement from NTPC’s Ramagundam station was also discussed.
The package, if fully delivered, would be the biggest addition to Kerala’s contracted power capacity in several difficult years for the state.
