Government nominates 13 journalists to Press Council of India

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has nominated 13 working journalists to the Press Council of India, a statutory body that oversees press freedom and journalism standards in the country.
The notification, issued on October 7, was made under the Press Council Act, 1978. It names six editors and seven non-editor working journalists to the council.
Among the editors are Pradeep Kumar Jain, Sayed Raza Husain Rizvi, Ankur Dua, Aparna Shukla, Raj Parwana or Narender Singh, and Vinod Bajpai. The non-editor members include Vinod Kohli, Geetartha Pathak, Prajnananda Chaudhuri, Kingshuk Pramanik, C K Nayak, Prasanna Kumar Mohanty and Bijoy Kakchingtabam.
The notification was issued by Joint Secretary K K Nirala. It amends earlier notifications of December 2024 and 2025 that constituted the current Press Council.
The Press Council of India is chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge and comprises representatives from various sections of the press, along with nominees of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and the University Grants Commission. It functions as a quasi-judicial body that can warn, admonish or censure newspapers and journalists for violations of journalistic ethics. The new nominations fill the working-journalist quota on the council.
