Iyer’s 102* Powers India Past West Indies in 1st T20I

Captain Shreyas Iyer smashed an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls as India beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first T20I in Lucknow on October 6.
Chasing 172, India completed the target in just 14.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. West Indies were bowled out for 171.
Iyer reached his hundred off 42 balls, hitting 10 fours and six sixes. It was his maiden T20I century and made him only the third India captain to score a hundred in the format, after Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.
The knock also broke Virat Kohli’s record for the highest score by an India captain in a T20I run chase. Kohli had made 94 not out against West Indies in Hyderabad in 2019.
Iyer shared an unbeaten 137-run partnership with Ishan Kishan, who made 37 not out, after India slipped to 35 for 2.
The innings lifted Iyer 18 places to seventh in the latest ICC T20I batting rankings with 786 points. Sunil Gavaskar praised the knock, calling it a strong signal that the skipper is back to his best.
