New report finds most companies struggle to prove AI returns

Most large companies are struggling to show real returns on their AI investments. A new report has made the finding.

The report was published on 8 October. It comes from WSJ Intelligence and Code and Theory, a Stagwell agency.

It studied 801 C-suite executives at US companies with at least $500 million in annual revenue.

The average enterprise runs 183 AI tools.

But 85 percent lack the systems to connect them.

The report calls this the orchestration gap. It is the distance between deploying AI and running as a connected, agentic company.

Three in five executives said tool proliferation left strategic execution stagnant.

Two-thirds said they routinely find redundant AI investments.

Only 15 percent of AI investments operate as a single unified system.

Ownership is unclear. Forty-two percent of CEOs believe they own AI orchestration. Fifty-seven percent of tech leaders believe the same.

One in four companies admits no one is clearly accountable.

Top barriers include siloed culture, fragmented data and skill gaps.
