NAACP sues Trump administration over election monitors plan

The NAACP has sued the Trump administration over a plan to deploy about 1,000 federal personnel as election monitors at polling places.

The suit was filed in federal court on 3 October. It seeks records about the plan ahead of the 6 November midterm elections.

The suit is led by NAACP general counsel Kristen Clarke. She headed the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division from 2021 to 2025.

The lawsuit targets the Civil Rights Division. It is now led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

The NAACP called the deployment unprecedented. It said the plan could interfere with voters' right to take part free from intimidation.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon called the use of DOJ monitors during the primaries aggressive and irregular.

In a separate case, Schumer, Jeffries, the DSCC, DCCC and DGA sued to block armed ICE and FBI agents at polling places.

A DHS spokesperson said ICE was not planning operations targeting polling locations.

Democracy Docket reported that a monitor in Minneapolis had pleaded guilty in 2016 to illegally accessing Florida election websites.
