Trump says Putin call coming ‘very soon’ on plague case

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he has a call scheduled with Russian President Vladimir Putin "very soon" to discuss a suspected case of pneumonic plague in Siberia.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the US was in "very deep discussions" about the case and would be able to report on it soon. The case involves the death of a 28-year-old laboratory technician, Darya Shipilova, at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East, who died of pneumonia of unknown origin.
The World Health Organization said the case presents a "very low" risk outside Russia. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pressed Moscow to share more information transparently, while the US Embassy in Moscow issued a health alert and the CDC is monitoring the situation.
Russian health authorities said plague bacteria were not found among the deceased researcher's contacts. Trump said on Monday the US stood ready to help Russia, calling pneumonic plague "a rough disease". The call also comes as Washington faces an October 18 deadline on new Russia sanctions decisions.
