AfD, BSW to seek end to Ukraine military support in state vote

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany will launch a joint motion with the small far-left BSW party in a regional parliament calling for an end to military support for Ukraine, an AfD spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The motion will be debated in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt next week. It will have no immediate impact on Germany's foreign policy, which is the exclusive responsibility of the federal government in Berlin, Reuters reported.
"This motion symbolises the desire for change," said Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD leader in Saxony-Anhalt. He led the party to its best-ever state election result last month, topping the poll but falling short of the majority needed to form a government. He has since explored cooperation with the BSW, which shares the AfD's opposition to German support for Ukraine.
BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht said Germany needed a government that resumes dialogue with Moscow. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that extremism is entering parliaments after the AfD's gains. The motion comes two weeks after Germany's foreign minister met his Russian counterpart with no sign of progress.
