Gujarat approves Rs 21,840 stipend for foreign medical interns

The Gujarat government has approved a monthly stipend of Rs 21,840 for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) undergoing their mandatory internship in the state.

Health Minister Praful Pansheriya announced the decision on October 5 after a meeting at the state administrative building in Gandhinagar. The move brings FMGs on par with regular MBBS interns in Gujarat.

The stipend applies to FMGs interning at government and GMERS medical colleges. It covers those allotted internship postings through the Gujarat Medical Council between June 1 and October 1, 2026, under National Medical Commission norms. About 350 graduates are expected to benefit.

FMGs must complete a one-year compulsory internship in India before they can practise medicine. The stipend is meant to support them during this period.

The decision follows a long dispute. The Supreme Court issued notice to Gujarat last November on a petition alleging FMGs were denied the stipend mandated by NMC regulations. FMG associations had complained that the state council ignored NMC directives while demanding a Rs 1 lakh security deposit from non-domicile interns.
