UH West Oahu Celebrates 50 Years With Week of Events

The University of Hawaii West Oahu is celebrating 50 years with a week of events from October 5 to 9.
The campus began in portable buildings. It is now a full university serving the growing Kapolei region.
Monday opened with a ceremony and a historical archive exhibit. The exhibit runs through November 6.
Wednesday brings a ceremonial planting of five native wiliwili trees. They symbolize leadership and deep-rooted growth.
Thursday's birthday celebration features music, a giant sheet cake and a student life fair.
A time capsule will be sealed on Thursday afternoon. It holds messages from the 50th-anniversary cohort.
An alumni reunion caps the week on Thursday evening. Graduates from five decades are invited.
Fifty years on, the campus serves students who once had to travel far. The celebration honors that journey.
The campus now serves thousands of students. Many are the first in their families to attend college. Community leaders praised the campus's role in the region. Its growth mirrors Kapolei's own rise.
