Nasscom Seeks GST Relief for Overseas Branches, R&D Exports

Nasscom has urged the government to ease GST rules for overseas branches of Indian IT firms. The demand comes ahead of the October 8 GST Council meeting.
The industry body also sought relief on R&D exports. It said current rules raise costs for technology companies.
Indian IT firms run offices and delivery centres abroad. Tax on transactions with these branches adds to their burden.
Nasscom said clearer rules would help exports. India's technology services are a major foreign exchange earner.
The council will take up several industry demands at its meeting. A decision on the IT sector's asks is awaited.
GST on cross-border services has long been a pain point. Companies face disputes over what counts as export.
The IT industry employs millions in India. Policy support is seen as key to keeping it competitive.
Nasscom has raised these issues in past meetings too. The industry hopes for a favourable outcome this time.
