North Korea warns US over Taiwan as Kim backs Russia

North Korea has criticised the United States over Taiwan. State media KCNA carried the warning on October 7.
A commentary by analyst Kim Myong Chol said US arms sales and military support for Taiwan are fuelling tensions in the Taiwan Strait. It said Washington should think twice about a direct confrontation with China over Taiwan.
The warning follows the arrival in Taiwan of the first two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets. Taiwan ordered 66 of them in 2019. China claims the island as its own territory.
In a separate message, leader Kim Jong Un pledged continued support for Russia. He sent a birthday message to President Vladimir Putin.
Kim said Pyongyang would expand joint work under the two countries’ strategic partnership. He said Russia’s war would end in victory. The message did not name Ukraine directly.
North Korea is estimated to have sent 14,000 to 15,000 troops to support Russia’s war since 2024, according to Ukrainian and South Korean estimates. The two sides signed a mutual defence pact in June 2024.
