India targets 874 GW power capacity by 2031-32

India's installed power generation capacity is likely to reach 874 GW by 2031-32, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The government plans to expand generation across thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable sources while scaling up energy storage and transmission infrastructure. Grid modernisation and stronger distribution networks will support reliability. As of June 30, 2026, India had 5,48,858 MW of installed capacity, with non-fossil sources accounting for 54.18 percent. Coal remained the largest single source at 2,24,158 MW, while solar stood at 1,62,152 MW.Thermal expansion continues: 21,080 MW has been commissioned since April 2023, with 47,545 MW under construction and contracts for 16,000 MW more. Renewable capacity under construction totals 1,47,720 MW. Pumped storage of 15,870 MW and battery storage of 15,754 MW are also being built. Grid modernisation has cut AT&C losses to 15.04 percent in FY25, with rural electricity supply averaging 22.6 hours daily.
