Indian envoy to Canada: show proof in Nijjar case

Indian High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik has issued an open challenge to Ottawa, saying it should produce evidence to support its allegations in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case instead of "dancing to Khalistani tunes." The envoy's sharp remarks come amid the long-running diplomatic row over Canada's claims that Indian agents were involved in the June 2023 killing of Khalistan activist Nijjar. India has dismissed the allegations as motivated and absurd.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had cited "credible intelligence," later upgrading to "clear and compelling evidence" of Indian involvement. India says no evidence has been shared through proper channels. The standoff has hit trade and people-to-people ties between the two countries. Canada has invited External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in the Niagara region on November 11-12, keeping a diplomatic door open.Patnaik's demand for proof restates New Delhi's position that allegations must be backed by verifiable evidence before any cooperation can follow.
