Malago stays as FIGC special administrator

Italy's football federation president Giovanni Malago is set to lose his job but return as a special administrator, under a compromise crafted by the Italian Olympic Committee on Tuesday. CONI's executive board voted unanimously to place the Italian Football Federation under extraordinary administration and proposed Malago to oversee daily operations, subject to ratification by its National Council. The move ends weeks of governance upheaval after Malago won the federation presidency in June with 68.58 per cent of the vote. Legal inquiries had questioned the ballot's validity because Malago was not a member of the FIGC at the time of his election. Under the arrangement, he will step down as president, run the federation as commissioner, and steer it toward new elections within three months. He will be eligible to stand again, with the election to be held no later than January 31. The dispute comes at a critical moment, with Italy co-hosting Euro 2032 and reeling from missing three straight World Cups.
