Sudan army captures Mazroub in North Kordofan

The Sudanese Armed Forces say they have captured al-Mazroub in North Kordofan state after heavy fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The army announced the gain on Friday, calling Mazroub the RSF's primary stronghold in the state and a key link for regional supply lines. The capture follows the army's seizure of Sodari town, the administrative headquarters of Sodari Locality, last week. Together, the gains leave the army in control of most of North Kordofan's localities, though the RSF retains positions in parts of Sodari and around El Obeid. The Kordofan region has become a major theatre of the conflict since late 2025, sitting between army-held central areas and RSF-controlled Darfur to the west. Sudan's civil war began in April 2023. About one-fifth of all recorded attacks in Sudan have occurred in Kordofan. The army called on residents in newly controlled areas to resume normal activities. Humanitarian groups have warned that fighting in Kordofan is worsening an already dire crisis, with millions displaced across Sudan.
