Apple’s Masimo Patent Bill Rises to $818 Million

A federal judge has ordered Apple to pay $184 million more in interest on its patent loss to Masimo. The ruling takes Apple’s total bill to about $818 million.
Judge James Selna issued the order on Monday. He said Masimo was denied royalty payments during the period Apple infringed its patent. He rejected Apple’s argument that interest would be a windfall for Masimo.
Masimo had asked for interest at 7 percent, which would have meant $243 million. The judge instead used Masimo’s own borrowing rate. Interest compounds yearly from when the infringement began.
The case goes back to a November 2025 jury verdict. Jurors found that Apple Watch features, including heart-rate notifications, infringed Masimo’s pulse-oximetry patent. The original award was $634 million.
The patent expired in June 2022. The ruling therefore covers past sales only. It does not affect heart-rate features on current Apple Watch models.
Apple is still appealing the verdict. The dispute is one part of a wider legal fight between the two companies that began in 2020.
