Kenya Ebola case explained: what is the Bundibugyo virus

Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola case. The patient died in Nairobi on October 5. Here is what we know so far. The virus is called Ebola Bundibugyo. It is one of the strains of the Ebola virus. It was first found in Uganda in 2007. The current outbreak began in eastern Congo in mid-May. The Kenyan patient lived in Congo for seven years. He fell ill about a month ago. He travelled by road to Uganda and then flew to Nairobi on October 3. He was isolated at Nairobi Hospital, where tests confirmed the Bundibugyo strain. Ebola spreads through contact with body fluids of infected people. It does not spread through the air. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain and bleeding. There is no approved vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain. There is also no specific treatment. Doctors give supportive care with fluids and oxygen. Vaccine and treatment trials are underway in Congo. Health officials traced 28 contacts in Kenya. They are also tracing 23 flight passengers and four crew members. Contacts stay in isolation for 21 days. The WHO recommends against travel restrictions on affected countries.
