US removes bombers from UK base over suspected Iranian drone threat

The United States has removed its bombers from RAF Fairford in England. The move came after reports of a possible Iranian drone attack on the base. American officials told NBC that the threat partly drove the decision. The Pentagon confirmed the removal on October 4. The bombers included B-1, B-2 and B-52 aircraft. A dozen B-1 bombers were stationed at the base. They have been redeployed to their home stations in the United States. RAF Fairford is about 100 miles west of London. The base has been used by US forces to strike Iranian targets. President Donald Trump said threats led to the decision. He said the US knows who made the threat. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there are strong indications Iran was involved. Iran denied the claims and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran. British police arrested six people near the base in late September. Five were UK nationals in their mid-20s. A dual British-Iranian national was also arrested. All were later released on bail. Police found petrol but no explosives in their vehicles. The investigation is still on. The US said it can deploy bombers from anywhere.
