UPI transactions up 23% in September, value tops Rs 29 lakh crore

India’s Unified Payments Interface processed 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India. Volumes grew 23 per cent from a year earlier, while value rose 18 per cent.
On a daily average basis, UPI handled 802 million transactions in September, crossing the 800-million mark for the first time. The average daily transaction value hit a record Rs 97,913 crore.
The monthly total dipped 1.8 per cent from August’s record 24.51 billion transactions, but only because September has 30 days against August’s 31. Daily averages actually rose in September.
UPI lets people pay directly from bank accounts using mobile phones. It is used for everyday shopping, bill payments and money transfers, and has become India’s main digital payments rail.
The NPCI data also showed strong growth in IMPS instant transfers, which stood at Rs 7.06 lakh crore in September, up 18 per cent from last year. The numbers underline how deeply digital payments have spread across retail and merchant payments in India.
