Made-in-India civil aircraft within two years, says Minister Naidu

India could have its first indigenous civilian aircraft within two years through a joint venture, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Tuesday. He was speaking at a quality management symposium in New Delhi.
Naidu said the aviation ecosystem is growing fast. Airlines have more than 1,600 aircraft on order worth about 100 billion dollars, and over 100 new airports are expected in the next 10 years. India currently has 165 airports, and domestic airlines operate a fleet of around 850 planes.
The minister said aircraft makers Boeing and Airbus already source components and services worth about 4 billion dollars from India. That figure is expected to touch 10 billion dollars by the end of the decade.
Naidu also said the government would look at manufacturing jet engines in the country, though he admitted that would take time. He stressed the need for quality materials and skilled workers for high-end aviation manufacturing.
India is one of the world’s fastest-growing domestic aviation markets. A home-built civilian aircraft would be a milestone for the Make in India push in aerospace.
