NYC Holds First AI Oversight Hearing as OpenAI Delays IPO

The New York City Council held the first AI oversight hearing in the United States on Monday. Executives from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta testified.
Council Speaker Julie Menin organised the hearing to explore safeguards while supporting innovation. She said the city will act while the federal government has not. The council is considering new laws to protect New Yorkers from AI risks.
A former Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, warned that the industry does not know how to control AI systems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the hearing that a 10 percent risk of AI extinction by the end of the decade is unacceptable. He said OpenAI has delayed its planned IPO over safety concerns.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent compared AI leaders to Hannibal Lecter while discussing regulation. Andreessen Horowitz ranked OpenAI first and Anthropic second in its top 50 AI apps by monthly revenue.
In other tech news, Sony launched QSSR, an AI graphics upscaling feature for the standard PS5. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei are the first supported games.
