Spain to Approve Rejected Housing Decrees via Caretaker Lawmakers

Spain’s government is set to approve on Tuesday two housing decrees that parliament rejected last week. That rejection prompted Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call a snap election for November 29.
Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun announced the move. The decrees will go to a standing body of 69 caretaker lawmakers who remain in place after parliament was dissolved. State broadcaster TVE said the body has a slim majority in favour of the measures.
The decrees include rent caps, a temporary ban on evictions and limits on corporate purchases of residential property. They would apply temporarily until a new parliament is formed.
Urtasun said the texts would have small variations but no major changes from the versions rejected by parliament last week. He said the protection level would match or exceed what was agreed before.
Sanchez was expected to address a press conference after the cabinet meeting. He has said he needs more seats in parliament to push through housing reforms.
