Tanker Hit By Projectile In Strait Of Hormuz Amid Attacks

The tanker Kazimah III was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on October 1, causing a fire, maritime intelligence firm Marisks told Reuters. Its crew were reported safe and evacuated. The attack is part of near-daily strikes on vessels transiting the strait since late September.

Britain’s UK Maritime Trade Operations agency has recorded at least one attack a day in Hormuz or the Gulf of Aden since October 2, according to reports. A US official told The Wall Street Journal that Iran has improved its ability to target ships in recent weeks.

Tehran’s statements about closing the strait stand alongside shipping data showing exports still moving. Provisional Kpler figures cited by Reuters showed Middle Eastern crude exports exceeded pre-war baselines on four days in the final week of September through pipelines, Red Sea shipments and ship-to-ship transfers.

Roughly a fifth of global oil normally moves through Hormuz. The United States rejected Iran’s seven-day plan to reopen the strait, and talks between the two sides have stalled even as a third US carrier group moves toward the region.
