Mumbai airport slot cuts: what flyers should know

Mumbai airport plans to temporarily withdraw 265 of 770 weekly international departure slots at Terminal 2 from October 25. Here is what it means for passengers.
Why: Adani-run Mumbai International Airport is redeveloping Terminal 1. Work starts in January 2027 and will temporarily affect about 5 million passengers a year, or 9% of traffic. T2 needs room for domestic flights moving out of T1.
Who is affected: 46 airlines. IndiGo faces the biggest cut, losing 74 of 224 weekly international departures. Air India loses 33 of 100, Emirates and Etihad 10 each.
What airlines say: carriers argue the plan withdraws capacity rather than shifting it to Navi Mumbai airport, 50 km away. They have asked for the capacity math behind the number.
What happens next: the Civil Aviation Ministry was to meet airlines on October 6. MIAL says the cuts are temporary and all historical slots will be restored once the new Terminal 1, with capacity for 20 million passengers a year, is ready.
