Mumbai name Mhatre vice-captain, leave out Suryakumar

Mumbai have named 19-year-old Ayush Mhatre as vice-captain for their Ranji Trophy season opener against Chandigarh, while leaving out Suryakumar Yadav.
Mhatre, who captained India to the U-19 World Cup title earlier this year, will assist skipper Siddhesh Lad in the match starting October 11 at Wankhede Stadium. Selectors see him as a future leadership prospect.
Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the T20 World Cup title on home soil this year, was not picked despite declaring his availability. Chief selector Rajesh Pawar said the panel wants the 36-year-old to play red-ball matches first.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is in the squad for match practice ahead of the New Zealand Test series in November. Shardul Thakur misses out with a fractured right middle finger.
Mhatre missed five months with a hamstring injury during IPL 2026 while playing for Chennai Super Kings. He recently cleared fitness tests at the BKC indoor facility.
