Rubio begins 4-day NATO tour in Iceland, Arctic on agenda

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has begun a four-day tour of three NATO allies, starting in Iceland on October 5. He will also visit Greece and Portugal before returning on October 8.
In Reykjavik, Rubio is expected to discuss Arctic security and economic cooperation. Russia has been restoring military bases in the Arctic and conducting missile drills there, raising allied concern.
In Athens, he will lead the US delegation at the sixth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue on October 6 and 7. The agenda covers defence, energy, regional security, Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Lisbon stop will focus on defence, economic development and technology cooperation, according to the State Department.
The visit comes weeks after President Trump shared an AI-generated map depicting Iceland and Greenland as part of the United States. Reykjavik summoned the US ambassador, calling the image ‘wholly inappropriate’. Iceland has no standing army and relies on NATO and a 1951 defence pact with the US.
