GST portal launches single-window registration for multi-state firms

Businesses that operate in more than one state can now begin their GST registration through a single process. The GST Network has launched a ‘Multistate Registration’ facility on the GST Common Portal, effective from October 1, 2026.
Under the new system, a business holding one PAN can select every state where it needs registration and enter common details just once. The portal then issues a single Master Temporary Reference Number, or Master TRN.
The applicant uses the Master TRN to file common registration information, including business details, promoter information and the list of goods and services. The system then creates separate state-wise TRNs, with the common data carried forward automatically.
The Master TRN must be acted upon within 15 days. For now, the facility is open only to normal taxpayers. Tax deductors, non-resident taxable persons and casual taxable persons must continue with the existing process.
Tax experts say the change cuts repetitive paperwork for multi-state companies. It is part of a wider official push to simplify GST compliance and speed up onboarding.
