West Bengal to get four new airports in two years

West Bengal will get four new airports in the next two years, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced on October 5.
The airports will come up at Charra in Purulia, Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur, Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur and Hasimara in Alipurduar. The state signed an agreement with the Civil Aviation Ministry to implement the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
The move will take West Bengal’s airport count from four to eight. Naidu said air travel has become an aspirational service for people across the country.
The Centre also wants Kolkata to get a second airport to meet growing demand. Rs 29,000 crore will be spent under the UDAN scheme in West Bengal over the next 10 years.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the move. He said a strong aviation network will boost trade, tourism, logistics and jobs in the state.
Naidu urged the state to frame a new civil aviation policy to attract investors. He said other states have nearly doubled their airports in 12 years while Bengal lagged behind.
