Germany Pledges $1.5 Billion Aid to Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth more than 1.3 billion euros, or about $1.5 billion, during a visit to Kyiv on Sunday.
About 1 billion euros is military aid, including long-range strike weapons, combat drones and satellite technology. Merz said it would let Ukraine target Russian launch pads. Another 350 million euros is energy aid for generators, substations and repair work ahead of winter.
Ukraine and Germany also signed 15 agreements worth more than 8.5 billion euros covering weapons production, procurement and security cooperation, including a joint counter-drone effort.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the visit an important signal of European support. Germany will fund joint production of interceptor drones to counter Russia’s jet-powered drones.
The visit came as Russia stepped up aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities, hitting infrastructure across Kyiv and other regions.
Zelenskyy wrote on X that the package was weaponry that will help right now, and called air defence key at this time.
