John Herdman Leads Indonesia To Historic ASEAN Cup Title

John Herdman has guided Indonesia to the first FIFA ASEAN Cup title, sealing a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Thailand in Jakarta. It is the former Canada head coach's first senior international trophy with Indonesia. Herdman took charge of the national team earlier this year.
His side topped their group with a 2-0 win over Singapore, a 0-0 draw with Malaysia, and a 9-2 thrashing of Bangladesh. The final finished 2-2 after extra time. Indonesia held their nerve in the shoot-out, winning 4-2.
Goalkeeper Emil Audero, chosen by Herdman for the knockout games, made a key save. After the match, Herdman thanked the fans. He said the team had fought for the country and called it the first big step on their journey.
Indonesia had earlier beaten Thailand for the first time in ten years. The win also gave the hosts their first competitive title since the Southeast Asian Games in 1991. Herdman previously coached Canada's men's and women's national teams.
Steven Vitoria, a former Canadian defender, is part of his staff. The coach called the win the first big step for his team. He urged fans to stay with the side on their journey.
