Voting Underway in Six Bypolls Across Three States and a UT

Voting is underway on Tuesday in six byelections across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Assam, with counting scheduled for October 9. Five assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat are at stake in a mini electoral test ahead of bigger state polls.
The assembly seats going to the polls are Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam (SC) and Dharapuram (SC) in Tamil Nadu, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry. The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam, with 19.07 lakh voters and 15 candidates, is the biggest contest of the day. Campaigning ended on October 4.
The Nandigram seat is being watched closely given its political history. The results on October 9 will be read as a signal of the public mood in each state. The Election Commission has deployed central forces and set up webcasting at sensitive booths to ensure free and fair polling. Security has been tightened in Nandigram and Nagaon, where the contests are expected to be the closest of the day.
