Supreme Court Seeks Answers on Voter Roll Deletions

The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre, the Election Commission, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on a plea seeking action against the CEC and a court-monitored probe into alleged voter deletions. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, issued the notices on October 5.
The plea alleges that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has led to wrongful deletion of lakhs of names and that Form 6 applications for new voters were not properly approved. The petitioner has listed 14 objections raised over ten months, claiming they were ignored. The plea seeks a Special Investigation Team probe and prosecution of officials involved.
The Election Commission has defended the revision exercise, saying it is meant to clean up duplicate and ineligible entries. The matter will be heard along with related petitions on October 8. The case has become central to the opposition’s campaign against the poll panel, even as the government says the judiciary should not interfere in the Commission’s work.
