What we know so far: Yemen’s ‘Dawn of Yemen’ offensive

Yemen's government launched Operation Dawn of Yemen on October 5, 2026, a major offensive against Houthi rebels. Here is what we know so far. The operation aims to retake the capital Sanaa and end Houthi control over large parts of Yemen.
Around 100 Saudi aircraft are providing air support, striking hundreds of Houthi targets. The Saudi-led coalition says it has destroyed 324 high-value targets and established air protection over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Yemeni officials claim government forces captured Dhubab district near the strait, including its airport, and cut the road to Mokha.
The Houthis deny any territorial losses. Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced the campaign, calling it a decisive phase. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Saudi-backed government had a right to defend itself.
The offensive marks the most serious escalation in Yemen's revived civil war. Humanitarian organizations have called for protection of civilians during the operation.
