US envoy meets Sudan army chief in Egypt in rare talks

US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos met Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Egypt on Monday, in a rare face-to-face as Washington pushes for a ceasefire. Boulos said on X that the United States, alongside Egyptian and regional partners, was working to advance a political solution to the crisis. He added that Washington was ready to support a comprehensive dialogue among Sudanese political forces leading to a preliminary roadmap for the country's future.
The meeting came less than two weeks after the United States withheld a visa for Burhan ahead of a scheduled UN appearance, a move sources linked to a US-backed ceasefire proposal that Khartoum has resisted. Sudan's army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023. The war has displaced more than 14 million people and unleashed waves of ethnically driven killings.
Washington has accused the RSF of genocide and the army of war crimes, which both deny.
