easyJet Strike: What Passengers Can Claim

easyJet's cabin-crew strike in Portugal has cancelled 443 flights between October 2 and 6, affecting Lisbon, Porto and Faro. If your flight was cancelled, here is what you are owed.
First, the airline must offer you a choice: a full refund or rerouting to your destination at the earliest opportunity. If you accept rerouting and face a long wait, the airline must provide meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation where needed.
Second, because this is a strike by the airline's own staff, it is generally not treated as an "extraordinary circumstance" under EU air passenger rules. That means compensation of 250 to 600 euros may apply depending on flight distance, unless easyJet offered an alternative that got you there with only a small delay.
Third, keep everything: booking references, cancellation notices and receipts for extra costs. easyJet says it expects to operate 55 percent of its schedule using minimum services and crews from other bases. A second strike is set for December 19 to 23, so Christmas travellers should watch for updates.
