Chelsea’s October Test: Five Games for Alonso
Xabi Alonso faces a defining October as Chelsea manager, with five games across two competitions testing his new-look side. The month could shape the Blues' season.
It starts with Bournemouth at home on October 10, followed by a trip to Everton on October 17. Then comes the big one: Tottenham visit Stamford Bridge on October 24 for a London derby. Chelsea then travel to Anfield on October 28 for a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Liverpool — a reunion for Alonso with his former club. The month ends with Manchester United visiting on Halloween, October 31.
Alonso began his reign with a derby win over Fulham and tough early tests against Arsenal and Brighton. But defensive problems have shown up, including a 3-0 defeat at Brentford in September.
With Spurs under Roberto De Zerbi and United under Michael Carrick also finding form, October offers no easy games. Coming through it unbeaten would be a real statement from Alonso's Chelsea.
