Nicaragua to Quit Central American Parliament

Nicaragua has announced it will withdraw from the Central American Parliament, deepening its isolation from regional institutions. The foreign ministry said on Saturday that it was denouncing the 1987 treaty that established the six-country body, "in the full exercise of its sovereignty", with immediate effect.
The move came a day after the Organization of American States passed a resolution urging Nicaraguan authorities to free political prisoners and restore civil liberties. Nicaragua left the OAS in 2023, calling it a tool of US interventionism, and in 2025 announced its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council after a UN report urged action on rights abuses.
President Daniel Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo have run the country since 2007, and last July announced Nicaragua would no longer hold elections. The country has been in crisis since April 2018, when protests suppressed by police left more than 350 people dead and thousands detained or fleeing.
Analysts say the withdrawal formalises an isolation already years in the making. Managua did not respond to requests for further comment.
