India, Pakistan trade protests over October 2 border deaths

India and Pakistan summoned each other’s senior diplomats on October 3 over a border incident in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector, in which two Pakistani nationals were killed by Border Security Force fire on October 2. The two governments give sharply different accounts of what happened.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, three individuals entered Indian territory and kept moving towards the border fence despite repeated BSF warnings to return to Pakistan. One of them turned back; the BSF engaged the other two after assessing them as an imminent security threat.

India summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires Saad Warraich in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest over the continued facilitation of illegal cross-border infiltration. New Delhi also linked the incident to what it called a pattern of cross-border movement by armed narcotics syndicates operating from Pakistan.

Pakistan summoned India’s Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged its own strong protest. Islamabad says the two men were unarmed civilians who crossed the border inadvertently, and has demanded an immediate, transparent and credible investigation.

The MEA rejected Pakistan’s allegations as “baseless and motivated” and urged Islamabad to respect the sanctity of the International Border. The competing accounts remain the central dispute.
