TDB Backs BigEndian’s Indigenous AI Vision Chip

The Technology Development Board under the Department of Science and Technology has signed an agreement with Bengaluru-based BigEndian Semiconductors for 130 crore rupees in support under the Research Development and Innovation Fund.
The project, named Project VeerAI, has a total cost of 260 crore rupees. The funding will come as optional convertible debt. It aims to develop a camera-focused AI Vision System-on-Chip on a sovereign technology platform, taking the technology from Technology Readiness Level 5 to Level 9.
The chip is initially aimed at surveillance applications, particularly CCTV systems, to reduce dependence on imported semiconductor supply chains. The platform combines AI processing with security, privacy and connectivity features. Over time, it is planned for use in defence, automotive, industrial and medical sectors.
"Semiconductors are foundational to almost every emerging technology," said TDB secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak. "Building indigenous capabilities in application-specific AI chips is an important part of strengthening India's technology ecosystem." BigEndian said the support would accelerate the chip toward commercial readiness.
