Two dead, one missing as floods hit Spain’s Catalonia

Two people have died and one remains missing after torrential rain and flooding swept across Spain's Catalonia region over the weekend. Catalan leader Salvador Illa confirmed one death after a wall collapsed in Tordera.
A second person died in Montornes del Valles, found in a flooded underground car park. Emergency teams were still searching on Monday for a missing person in Pineda de Mar.
Catalan authorities issued a red alert and urged residents to stay indoors from 8 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday. The regional weather service Meteocat called it an exceptional weather system over the Mediterranean.
Rainfall reached 288 liters per square meter in Vilassar de Mar and 213 liters in Barcelona. Homes were flooded and cars submerged in Bellvitge and Cornella near Barcelona. Flights at Barcelona airport were cancelled or delayed, all local trains were disrupted, and a performance of Verdi's Aida at the Liceu opera house was called off.
Firefighters carried out 2,440 operations during the episode, including 226 rescues. Road travel remained difficult around Barcelona on Monday morning, with several routes closed in both directions.
