Trump renews $5,000 checks pledge if GOP keeps Congress

President Donald Trump has renewed his promise of $5,000 payments to every adult American, saying the money would go out only if Republicans keep control of Congress after the November 3 midterm elections. He posted the pledge in a Truth Social video on Saturday.
He first made the pledge at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on September 9. Alongside it, Trump is promoting two smaller federal payment programs already underway. On Friday, he said 20.8 million Medicare beneficiaries would receive one-time checks of $90 from the Medicare Improvement Fund.
Separately, the government began issuing $500 refund checks to about 950,000 people with unsubsidized marketplace coverage. A Reuters analysis found 71 percent of that $339 million is flowing to 13 states with competitive Senate and governor races.
The White House has not named an agency to run the $5,000 plan or a funding source. Analysts estimate it would cost about $1.2 trillion and need new legislation. David Schweikert warned it could push interest rates higher, while Jamie Raskin called it a political bribe.
Congress has not authorized any payment program. The $5,000 check remains a campaign pledge tied to the midterm result, not a benefit anyone can apply for.
