Delhi to use AI cameras to catch traffic violations

Delhi is set to use artificial intelligence to catch traffic violations, from wrong-way driving to mobile phone use behind the wheel. The system will rely on AI-powered cameras across the city.
The cameras can detect offences such as driving on the wrong side, jumping red lights and using a mobile phone while driving. Violations flagged by the system will lead to automated challans being issued to vehicle owners.
Officials say the move will help enforce rules on roads where manual policing is thin. Delhi’s traffic police have been expanding their network of cameras in recent years.
AI-based traffic enforcement is already in use in several Indian states. Supporters say it reduces corruption and ensures consistent penalties. The Delhi rollout is expected to make the capital’s roads safer during the busy festive season.
Delhi already uses cameras for speed detection and red-light violations at major junctions. The AI upgrade will widen the net to behaviours that are harder to police manually. Transport experts say consistent enforcement, more than heavy fines, is what changes driver behaviour over time.
