Huawei, Qualcomm sign multi-year patent deal on 5G, AI

Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a broad multi-year patent licence deal covering 5G, computing, artificial intelligence and networking. The companies announced the agreement on October 5.

The deal includes cross-licences to both companies’ patent portfolios. Qualcomm will also buy some of Huawei’s US patents in computing, AI and networking.

It is Huawei’s first patent-licensing agreement with Qualcomm that covers 5G technology. It is also the first under which Huawei licenses patents in computing and AI to the US chip designer.

Huawei said the deal should push the total value of its patent licensing agreements above $6.9 billion. Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction will close after regulatory approvals.

The agreement follows Huawei’s cross-licensing deal with HP on Wi-Fi patents in August. It shows Huawei remains a top patent holder despite US sanctions that have limited its access to advanced chips since 2019.

Huawei’s first IP payment went to Qualcomm in 2001. Its first IP income came from Motorola in 2011.
