Thousands protest in Delhi, Mumbai demanding CEC resign

Thousands of protesters marched in Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police detained demonstrators for the third straight day.
In Mumbai, opposition leaders Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray led a rally calling for the poll chief to step down. In Delhi, protesters gathered near Jantar Mantar in the evening, and police detained several of them, according to Reuters.
The protesters say a nationwide voter-roll revision exercise launched last year has removed millions of eligible voters from the rolls. They allege the changes benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission and the BJP deny the allegations.
More than 700 people were detained in Delhi on October 2 alone, including opposition leaders and student activists, TBS News reported. Police imposed prohibitory orders and shut entry and exit at 11 Metro stations.
The agitation may intensify. An opposition alliance plans a “save democracy” march to the Election Commission office on Monday. The Gen Z Cockroach Janta Party has announced a rally in Delhi on October 10.
